Notice Period

Sorry if I am asking a silly question but I am hoping someone can help me with the following.

I am about to hand my notice in and it states 4 weeks as the notice period. If I hand it in on Friday does Friday count as day one out of the 28 days or is it Monday?

I always took it as 4 weeks from the following day. So if you hand your notice in on a Friday, then the Friday in 4 weeks' time will be your last day and they shouldn't expect you in work after that.

I always did it from that day I handed it in and asked HR to confirm the day. They always agreed.
