Anyone commute daily to London from Derby?

Am considering applying for a position in London but would need to commute from Derby.
Is this doable, practical or am I kidding myself?

How close to the station are you for both ends of the journey and would you be able to get flexible start and finish times?

What kind of hours would you do/how many days a week? Do you live near the station in derby and will work be near the mainline in London or will you need to take other transport internally?
I knew people who commuted from Leicester to London (direct train Midland mainline) can be exhausting and expensive... But if just the one train and not much else, the journey can be used quite productively ie. Work on train rather than bringing home etc

By train? How long does it take and how close to the station are you? At both ends.

I work in London sometimes, not every week but maybe once or twice a month. I use the east coast line though from Newark but I'd imagine its similar distances. I can be walking in front door 90 mins after leaving kings cross, I've got approx a 25-30 min drive from Newark to home.

Mornings are worse as I leave earlier than I need to as I worry about traffic, etc and end up sitting on the station for ages.

Its not cheap but I enjoy the actual train journey. I wouldn't want to drive there as you don't get the "chill out" time which you soon the train.

I live about 20 mins from Derby but about 5 mins from a local train station that goes through Derby.
I would need a taxi from London train station but not far.
I can drive to station from home.
Is HS2 an option in the forseeable future?
This is a position I have only dreamt about atm. Could it really be a possibility?
Surely loads of people do this and cope?

That's a 2 hour train journey, right? So 2 hours plus the 20 mins local train plus drive plus taxi.. Realistically that's 2hours45 each way. That sounds insane! Plus it will cost a fortune, surely?

Could you move for the job or live down south Mon-Thurs?

Why taxi? Tube would be way quicker and cheaper.

I wouldn't. I live about 20 mins from derby and commute from east kids about once a month. Takes about 2 1/2 hours each way. season ticket and parking would be about £9k a year.

Or £11,000 for first class and a travel card

I was offered a London based job last year and turned it down. Just not worth the commute

I've had more than my share of travelling, and wouldn't do it.

I was under the impression that a lot of people commuted but from replies it seems not.
Moving nearer not an option and the position is London only.
There is nothing in this specialism around here so this would be my only opportunity.

Well then rent a box room in a rented house two or three nights midweek. Advertise for a room share or stay in a YHA to break things up. Lots of people work away from home on week days. A 2 hour 45 commute each way is ridiculous. And yes I know a lot of people who commute long distance. It seems to cap at 1 hour 30 mins each way.

Why not try it and see how it goes? You can always leave. I have a 2 hour commute each way but I get a lot done on the train, and when I took the job, I decided I'd give it 6 months and then see how I felt. Five years later, still doing it!

What support do you have at home? People can and do commute for that length of time. I do some work in London where my door-to-door commute is about 1.5 hours and that to me doesn't feel long, although I'm not doing it all the time. I could see how people could easily manage a 2 hour commute.

Would you have the potential for working at home at all at some point.

I've done a similar distance before, 9-6 FT in London, from Grantham. It was hard but doable. I didn't have children at the time and I think that would be very hard. Although with smart phones now I think you'd have a chance to get a lot of admin type stuff done on the train.

I guess a lot depends on the back up at home. But it does sound like it's an opportunity you'd regret not trying, so agree it might be worth trialling and see if it works for you and your family. Plus the odd night in London options pp have suggested.

I suppose you could experiment. Leave home at 5.30 am to get to the office by 8, leave the office at 6:30 and be home by 9pm

The idea of a "9 to 5" job is very much in the past.

After a while the people at home will view you as an occasional visitor that they see at weekends.

Can you find out more about the company? Depending on the role many places may allow you to work flexibly, e.g. 3 long days in the office (staying over in London) and 1 day working from home would be very doable. I have a friend who lives in Glasgow and works in London, who knows a number of people who do the same. She works around 8 days per month from the London office, does lots of scheduling to make sure meetings she needs to attend in person happen on these days, and does every thing else via email and telephone meetings. She had the job before moving up there though, so the company knew her and what she would deliver.

Its impossible, period. There is no way round it. If there was a way round it everyone will be doing it . Train ticket alone will cost you over 10k a year . Journey time can be done in 1hr 14mins plus 30 mins or more tube journey to your office lol . You can get a motorcycle its 35 pounds a day and 4 hours to and from London a day.

I've worked with people who have done long commutes. There will be delays due to weather, cancellations, unforseen events. I would suggest renting a room in London, rather than travelling back & forth. I've done long commutes, your life becomes work, travel, sleeo

Not by train but I do 1 hr 15 mins each way by car and it's exhausting.
