applying for a job after many years...reference?

If you have applied for a job after an employment gap of 7plus years....who did you put as a reference? Having studied in the meantime I have an educational reference but I need an employment one too and my last job is not an option.

you can say on your cv that references are available on request.

just a guess but perhaps you could use a character reference?
