Explaining gap on cv after redundancy and maternity leave

So I'm trying to get back in to the job market...but don't know how to explain my current situation...

I was made redundant when I was pregnant earlier in the year. I was lucky enough that my redundancy payment meant that I didn't need to rush back to work after having the baby but now the pennies are tight so I need a job.

How do I explain the last six months? I'm kinda reluctant to say that I've been on maternity leave and that I was made redundant if at all possible - my reference from previous employer won't say anything about redundancy thats another story

Can I say:
Current: Taking a career break during which I've been studying for xxx professional qualification and taken on volunteering roles (I could add more about the volunteering).

OR should I say why I've not been at work and say something like-
Current: Taking a career break to spend time with my family. During this time, I have also been studying for x and volunteering with xx.

Or should I say something else?

I don't want to leave a gap - when I've been the recruiting manager I've always been suspicious of gaps assumed they were in prison

anyone got any ideas?
thanks

I just say "date-date at home with my children". Yours sounds much better!

Thanks wips

Its so hard to know what to put... I feel that if i mention the children i might get penalised. Have you found that? Or am i being too paranoid!
