I think you should be proud of leaving on principle. Realistically, there aren't that many commercial enterprises that are 100% squeaky clean, but good for you for having principles. I'm sure you'll find something else - especially since you haven't made a habit of walking out.

edam · 26/09/2006 23:03

They do have to give you a reference. And it would be very, very stupid of them to say anything potentially damaging - you could take them to court for making any assertions that aren't strictly factual (so, they could say you walked out without giving notice, but not slag you off or claim you were a terrible employee).

Suggest you write to them confirming you have left their employment and why and politely state that you are sure they are aware of their legal obligations with regard to references.

Leave it a week and then get a friend to call them up posing as a potential employer to find out what they say.

PinkTulips · 26/09/2006 23:04

good for you

edam · 26/09/2006 23:05

Worth checking out the Department of Trade and Industry website, has all the employment law stuff on it and will tell you what references can and can't say. Think it's called Tiger but if you google the department they have a link to it on their main site.

i kind of know what you mean, though only worked in a sport shop were we got pressured to sell store cards evryday, with the highest interest!!

the people we were signing up were on low income, already in debt and we used to all feel bad1!! the bank charges were a rip off as well and these people never understood what they were signing up for.

some poeple who were selling the card used to give the wrong information and people used the card thinking it was a loyalty card only to realise once they recieved the bill that it was an actual credit card!!

starsq · 26/09/2006 23:09

Exactly u know it dawned on me last week when i went to my bank for a review and thought gosh how much people end up paying on loans and then theres me being told i must con well apparently 'help' sort out others finances by giving them 33 % to eanr huge bonuses but then again did i want this in view of fact today society is getting heavily into debt and there;s me adding to it ,,,i know it takes two as the person is coming in the office but its trust my customers trust me so how can i con them to get that big house i dremed of for my girls ,,,no way I am gono try my hand at sumthing else maybe driving or maybe a hotel manager or even go the whole opposite way and become a stripper joke

edam · 26/09/2006 23:14

Stars, maybe you should contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau and see if they have any jobs going? Don't know if you've done office work, but given your experience, it might be interesting to work somewhere helping people who have got into debt.

Starsq, you should be working for an ethical financial company. Look some up and ask them for a job - there are more and more springing up. Walking out of your old job because you couldn't compromise your principles any longer would be a good move in their eyes.

nikkie · 27/09/2006 11:47

Good for you!

ledodgyrobespierre · 27/09/2006 11:52

I once went to an interview there and as soon they asked me if I was planning on having kids in the near future I realised I didn't want the job! I bet they didn't ask that question to the men.

FluffyCharlotteCorday · 27/09/2006 11:52

Report the fuckers to the FSA while you're about it.

Judy1234 · 30/09/2006 19:08

If you think the law has been broken you can report that and keep your job. If they ask you to leave then you can bring a claim under the Pubilc Interest Disclosure Act which protects whistleblowers.
Have you actually resigned?
May not be wise to give company names here though. Your employers might read it.

starsq · 14/10/2006 23:28
