NEED advice - bad credit history, been offered job - do I be upfront b4 they check???

I have been offered a secretarial role at a law firm. They seem really keen to employ me and even waited two weeks to invite me back to the second interview whilst i was away on holiday.

However, i have been sent through the offer letter and contract of employment and it says that they will be running a routine security check on me which will involve job references, criminal background and a credit check to check for CCJs, bankruptcies and Court Orders. I have no CCJs or Court orders but I have been bankrupt in the past - which i have to add is now discharged and due to be completely wiped off my credit report in 5 months time.

What do i do? Do i email or telephone the HR dept to be upfront and honest about it or do i just fill in the security check form and let the security people inform the HR department - which they will probably want to discuss with me anyway?

I havent slept a wink all night and feel sick with dread - its so unfair as this is my chance to better my life and get back on track, I need this job!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It will look better if you tell them first. If you lose the job you would have lost it anyway. But they are far less likely to be forgiving if it looks like you've been keeping quiet in the hope they wouldn't find out.

Just a message to the people who helped me by replying - I contacted my HR department and explained my situation. They got back to me and said that they were grateful for my honesty and should it come up in the search it wouldnt make any difference to my employment. They also said that they were happy for me to be joining them and that the offer of employment was still there. What a relief!! I can sleep at night now!! X

Was going to say tell them but see that you already have.

Well done. Honesty is the best policy I think!
