Supply Teachers' Earnings

I'm a stressed teacher who is feeling overwhelmed. I'm seriously thinking about handing in my notice and finishing at Christmas. I'm drawn towards supply work as I feel it would enable me to regain some life/work balance. I'm fifty three and I've been teaching for twenty three years - it's becoming harder and harder to remain on top of my workload and I feel exhausted. I'm wondering how much work on average a supply teacher can expect to get and how much on average they earn in a month. I'd be grateful for any information.

Try also posting this on the Staffroom board, as that's where a lot of people in the teaching profession post click here

I think it's about £100 a day. I looked into it recently and they almost took my arm off.

In fact, another branch of the same agency from a different part of the uk rang me and said they would help me relocate there as they were so short of teachers.

Some agencies do 'guaranteed income' so they will pay you a set rate every day and you still get it if they don't give you any work. Of course you can't say no to anything either.

Your rate depends on what point on the pay scale you are. I presume given your experience, your rate would be more like £160/day

My agency will now only pay at the rate of the vacancy so if the absent teacher is M3 then that is the maximum you get for that booking.

I left FT teaching for supply and haven't looked back. The money isn't great but being outside the bureaucratic horror is worth it. Smile

I'm interested in this too. I have a friend who does it and is very happy.
