Criminal record check

I've been offered a job (temporary contract covering maternity leave) and need a disclose for it. That's fine, and the form asks for my addresses over the last 5 years.

However, HR are also asking me to complete another form giving details of all my addresses since I was 16 (of which there have been about 35 and I don't remember all the exact addresses) AND as I lived abroad for a year 16 years ago they want me to pay to contact the police in that country and get a fingerprint check from there (which I have checked, and now can take up to 22 weeks).

I feel like phoning the person who offered me the job on Monday to explain that I think this is unreasonable over and above the full disclose, expensive and because it's only a temporary job, up feasible, but would that just make me look really difficult???

Just give the information that you can, and leave out what you don't remember. Surely they can't expect more than that. And I would probably say you've asked about the finger prints and it would take 6 months...

Others can come along with different advice. I don't think there is any need for you to disclose an address you lived at 16 years ago. Unless the job is for MI6 or equivalent. Just put down the addresses you remember as accurately as you can and miss out the address when you lived abroad unless they already know about it. That's what I would do.

DH says yes that is normal for them to do those checks for, say, government jobs, but they have to do it and they have to pay for it. Sounds very suss for them to ask you to pay for it, that is against the law.

Thanks for the info, it is for a government job. I,ve sent through the addresses since I was 16 now, and hoping they will just forget I mentioned living abroad! Interesting that they expected me to pay for the foreign check tho - cheek!!
