hi

been to a careers meeting today and the lady sort of suggested that a career with 2dc under 3yo is ambitious. i know lots of mums in make do jobs as myself have one and all career jobs seem to be full time. is this just the ultimate sacrifice until theyre at secondary school? i also know of lots mums who started careers when kids lot older ...

Went back to work on a part time bank contract when DS was 2, this became full time hours but still on bank about 18 months later and then I left and got full time job in May 2012 and have worked full time ever since, It's not a career but I enjoy it and I can leave work at work.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 22/08/2014 21:24

Forgot to say DD was 4 and I started bank work as a) I was bored and b) the hike in living meant that our business couldn't sustain me and DH working in the business anymore.

It's much easier to have a career job part time if it's established before you have kids. I have a 1yr old and am p/t but I was established before I was pregnant.

I had a career before DS was born, and I still have a career. I went back to work when he was six months old. I worked really hard to establish my career before I got married and had a baby, and I'm not planning on giving that up.

I am really fortunate to have a fairly flexible job though, so I don't need to work 9-5; I can work evenings and weekends etc, so DS doesn't need to be in nursery five days a week yet.

hi yes it would have been more sensible to get a career before kids but that never really happened eventhough i had all the qualifications/expr etc Sad . i spose i was a very inmature 21yo when left uni and then 3 years later i had dd - just how it happened for me but would like to see if i can get career before im 30 so have under 3 years (did actually see a part time career job today so they do exist Smile

I still haven't and mine are 10, 14 and 16. My SIL on the other hand never stopped working full-time, she took a years maternity leave with both but never considered part-time. Both decisions were equally valid. It's how you feel about it tbh.

clary · 23/08/2014 23:08

I never stopped working.

I went back full time when DS1 was 5mo, ditto DD (2 years later). When Ds2 was born 2 years after that I was lucky enough to be able to switch to 4 days (still technically full time as 30 hrs).

Did that for some years then changed jobs 5 years ago to properly full time role (but in education so have holidays off) - DC were then 6/8/10 yo.

It is totally possible and you need good childcare;, supportive OH and maybe family/friends in emergency are also useful.

I don't have a career but I do have a full time job. I went back full time after having my eldest 3 at the following ages:

Ds - 13 months (went back part time when he was 4 months)
Dd1 - 15 months (took extra time off after maternity leave)
Dd2 - 5 months (couldn't afford to be off for long)
Dd3 - I'm currently on maternity leave, due to go back when she's 6 months old but think I'm going part time (3 days a week) until she goes to school.

Working FT is easier when your kids are younger.

Once they are at school you have to deal with holidays, homework, brownies/cubs, after-school clubs, parents' evenings etc etc

Mine are aged 8 to 16 and I still don't (quite) work FT so as to have a little flexibility for all this stuff.

hoboken · 23/08/2014 23:15

I started working full time when DD was 12.

WidowWadman · 23/08/2014 23:17

Went back to work FT each time when my kids were 9 months old. No regrets.

foofooyeah · 23/08/2014 23:23

Went back to work full time when both were 6 months old. Needed to pay the mortgage. Do wonder if I made the right decision.

17leftfeet · 23/08/2014 23:51

I went back to work full time when dd1 was 10 weeks (in the days of 12 weeks of maternity leave) and then again when dd2 was 12 weeks

I second a previous poster on my phone so I can't scroll up that said it is easier to work full time when they are preschool age

I always found working full time with little ones means you make the most of the time you have off so I always felt I had less time with them in total but I had more 'quality' time with them
