hi

feel pretty rubbish abt myself right now. studied at uni with journalism degree but instead of waiting for the right job i spent the next 3 years going from one rubbish job to next. 3 years on from that ive requalified as a horticulturalist to find that pay stinks and its not really that family friendly. the dream is to combine the two qualifications i have and be a horticultural journalist. i am on mat leave next year so have time off to build up work but is it really possible to risk it all in a new career especially as i may start off freelance. have dd whose 2 and pg with dc2

Can I suggest you start writing for some trade mags? Look about at some of the titles which are meant for gardening businesses and offer them some articles. It's not well paid but it's better than nothing and is a start.

I began like that and now I write on an almost full time basis as a freelancer. I don't earn much...a lot of my work is published online now but I do sometimes write for trade publications too.

Also, think creatively and start your own blog.
