Improving job interview technique/answers

So, I've just been rejected for a role that I was fairly confident that I'd get. I'm not too unhappy about not getting the role but what concerns me when I read the feedback is my answers to interview questions. I thought I had got better at answering questions without being too brief.

So, what sort of answers are interviewers looking for when they ask you:

What is your greatest achievement?
What are your weaknesses?
Describe a difficult situation and how did you handle it?
What can you contribute to the role if appointed?

There are plenty of others of course but what makes a good answer?

any advice gratefully received. Thank you in advance.
