Covering letter in email?

I am applying for a job which asks for Cv and their own application form attached to an email.

Should I treat the email body as an opportunity for a covering letter as well? Or would it just be ignored?

I think you should. It might be ignored, but it might add to your application. It definitely won't count against you.
