im due to start back work sept 1st however I did not receive maternity pay but maternity allowance from government as I had just switched jobs when I found out I was pregnant. I am now looking for another job as I do not wish to go back to my previous (I have an interview lined up). I understand if payed maternity from employer you have to go back a minimum of 6 weeks. I was wondering whether this was the case with maternity allowance? I cant see how it could be when they did not pay towards my maternity. very confusing and don't feel I can ask my employer as they are not very helpful. If anyone knows anything regarding this matter info will be greatly received. thanks!

If all you receive is statutory maternity, there is no requirement to go back to work for the same people afterwards.
If you get extra (occupational) maternity pay, some companies have a clause that requires (partial) repayment on none return to work.

I can't see that MA can have any return periods attached, as some of the people who qualify no longer have an employer.
