Working out annual leave for an intern

Hi everyone,

We've just taken on an intern for the first time and the uni she has come from has asked for us to confirm details such as working hours, rate of pay etc. and also her annual leave allocation.

She is only with us for 8 weeks, and when I've used the HMRC annual leave calculator it says she should get 35 hours (and 5 minutes!). This seems a lot, nearly a weeks holiday when she is only with us for 8 weeks.

Have any of you taken on interns before, does 35 hours sound about right?

5.6 weeks/year pro rata for 8 weeks is 4.2ish days (assuming working 5 days/week). 35 hours sounds a bit high for 4.2 days unless working very long hours...

Is an intern actually an employee with all those sorts of entitlements? I wasn't aware of that - especially if it is an 8 week placement. I am sure we have not given annual leave to people who only came for a few weeks placement but I don't know what the terms of their placements were. I don't think they were even paid - just expenses.

Sounds ok - if she worked a full year, 52 weeks, she'd get almost 6 weeks holiday with bank hols, which is 12%. 12% of 8 weeks is 0.9 of a week, so almost a full week.

missimperfect yes according to HMRC an intern is a 'proper' employee and has rights such as annual as such. I thought that it if was a short term placement such as that then she wouldn't get annual leave but she does.

I make it 4.3 days, including Bank Holiday allowance.
