Been offered a new job, how to tell my boss

I have been offered a new job, my boss is on leave from Wednesday and I am not sure if I will see him to speak to so that I can let him know and ask if he is happy to provide a reference. Is it ok to email him..? just not sure what to do or say...??

Can you phone him to explain? Then follow up with an email or other form of writing, copying to your HR department (or admin section if appropriate).

If you can't phone him then just email anyway.

What kind of reference do you need? Many references nowadays will be provided by HR and will simply confirm how long you worked there, your post and salary.

It's too late this time, but if you need a fuller reference than that, then I would recommend asking your boss if he'll provide a reference before you submit the application. Congratulations anyway!

Have you given notice in your current job? If not, that is the first thing to do.

I was in a similar position a few weeks ago, got offered new job but boss had just went on leave. I spoke with his boss and HR, and emailed him asking him to call me when convenient.
HR will probably be providing the ref anyway, and if they need a detailed ref then the new employer can probably wait if he is only on leave for a week or two if you let them know.

personally I would not contact my boss while on holiday for this. He's entitled to a holiday like anyone else and shouldn't be interrupted with this.

Tell his deputy/next in line and/or hr and they will deal with as necessary. Your new employer should understand and wait for their reference.

It's up to your boss whether or not they pick up their email while on holiday (personally I do...silly fool :) ) so I would write a formal email to him and to HR. Get it on record so you can start your formal period of notice.
