New job - so unhappy

Just started a new job yesterday but I hate it already. To be honest I didn't really want to take it and really didn't want to leave where I was working. I feel so sick with worrying about it. I know there are plenty of people out there that would be grateful for any job but I feel like I am too old to be stuck somewhere I am so unhappy.

I had a 'career' break of 7 years and returned to temporary work last year so this has all happened very quickly. I don't tend to give up on things but I really feel like walking away would be the best thing. Give them a chance to reappoint/ call on the reserve.

I can't sleep hence the late hour of starting the thread.

Any advice/similar experiences much appreciated.

What is it about the job that is making you unhappy?

I walked out of a job last year after being unhappy there for 6 months. Ineffectual management, low level bullying and poor training. I had expected better as it is a large, very well known employer.

I found another job within 2 weeks so was very lucky.

I sympathise totally but perhaps you should give it a little more time?

I always find new jobs unsettling and hate them for a few weeks. I agree you need to give it a bit more time.

I agree that you can't possibly assess the job in any meaningful way after one day. Loads of people have a bad first day.

My last two "proper" jobs (I work for myself now) I hated for a few months. The first one, in between me being appointed and me starting, someone else resigned and they rejigged, giving me a completely different job. I took it, promised my manager I'd give it a few months, hated it and talked to her throughout. After six months it was changed and I was there happily for a few years.

The second one, I was being appointed to a new role and my manager effectively undermined me all the time as she didn't want to let go the stuff I was supposed to be doing. I spoke to her after a couple of months, and things improved, and I stayed there for a while as well, enjoying the job.

But for both of them, if you'd asked me at the few weeks stage, I would have said I hated it.

I took the job because I had already turned down two (temporary) posts to continue working as a temp in my old job. My old job has been finally advertised as a fixed term contract for a year with possible extension which would give me an opportunity to get my head sorted. Plus I know the people and can do it all fairly easily, have built up good relationships etc.

This new job has no handover, very high turnover of staff, and no one has been there more than a year. Very divisive attitude from some of the staff too. I also don't really know what I am supposed to be doing.

I think I will try to see if I can get back to my old job and if that doesn't work will stay put and see. This new one is more money and I know I can do it but not what I want to do. I only took it because I felt I couldn't turn it down. Daft really.

And I know I always have a really shit start with new jobs and hate the etc so I was fully prepared for it to be like that but not to this extreme I suppose. I do hear what you are all saying but hope there is no shame in walking away.

Another one here who has always spent the first week at a new job thinking "WTF have I done?". There was only one job where the initial horror didn't subside; in that case I promised myself that if I still didn't like it after 6 months I'd get something else. That worked.

I hope you're back here in a couple of weeks' time saying that you're enjoying it a bit!

Sometimes we are so much connected with our previous job that its quite hard to accept new one so if you have joined recently, give sometime to yourself to accept changes and if you can't switch to new one. There are many popular sites online where you can search for a better job.
