Thick sick leave question - signed off for a week

Last Friday I was given a note that says I was not fit to return for a week - does that mean I need to go in to work tomorrow or not?! If it makes a difference I was given the note at 4pm and my usual Friday working hours end at 2.30pm.

My brain hurts (literally, I have viral meningitis) and I just can't work it out.

If you are still ill, go in today if you can and get another note.

Was last Friday a work day, for which you were absent? If not, I would interpret the cover as starting on the Saturday, and lasting for 7 calendar days. It does sound like you need to see your doctor again. If you are signed off again, seek clarity on the final day of sickness covered. (It would be straightforward if all drs filled in the 'from' and 'to' section, instead of talking in terms of weeks.) Hope you are feeling better soon.

Give the docs a ring, my lovely. They'll sort out a new sick note which you'll pick up tomorrow.

Love MK x

Thanks all. Have spoken to my gp now who thinks the hospital should have signed me off for two weeks anyway and will write me a new one up to and including next Thursday so all being well I'll be back at my desk next Friday. Have spoken to my boss too and thankfully she wasn't peed off with me as I'd feared.

So far today I've had a bath, made a couple of phone calls and made a sandwich, and after that had to have a lie down!

fascicle yes, I should have been at work on the Friday but was instead having a CT scan and lumbar puncture - I need to self cert for the Wednesday but saw my GP on the Thursday who sent me straight to the hospital. Didn't get the note until the Friday when I got the diagnosis. Do I self-cert for the Thursday and then the Friday is covered by the original note?

Embarrassed to admit that I work in HR...
