Freelance journos/writers - do you have a website?

I've been freelancing for about four years now (in between having babies) and am at the point where I'm getting quite a lot of work.

I also put myself forward for a lot of new stuff, and forward people my blog, that I've used to publish my stories. It doesn't look very professional though so I'm starting to think about other ways to present myself and my work.

Do I really need a website?? I just the idea of being so exposed! I don't even have a Facebook account. And I don't like the thought of it being About Me, the point of what I do is to write about other subjects and people.

Do I need to move with the times or is there another way to present my work/have people find me? I'm on LinkedIn, too, but am yet to find any work that way.

OMG. Errors galore in that post, sorry. You would never believe that I write for a living.

I wouldn't bother with a website. There's lots of places online where you can host a portfolio and then you simply keep that up to date and forward to prospects. I'd love to be able to recommend somewhere to you but sorting something similar out has been on my 'to do' list for the last year Smile

Have you tried People per Hour?

I'm a writer and just use a simple, smart and rarely updated Wordpress blog to advertise my stuff.

I like what you say about preferring to write about other people, not yourself -- can you include that in your short, pithy "About Me" section?

WhatsGoingOnEh · 09/07/2014 11:58

Oh, and LinkedIn is great. Are you on that? Get on that. :)

I am a freelancer and an author with a website- and yes I use it to showcase my work.
I also have an About page because I feel it adds meaning to what I do and of course who I am.

I've never had any useful feedback from Linkedin and don't think it's worth it unless you know how to actively use it and promote yourself- which clearly I didn't!

There are plenty of ways to build a free website now- either Wordpress or some other sites where you pay a very small annual fee for your domain and hosting etc.

I have a blog about the industry I work in but I don't have anything saying I'm available for writing and content marketing. It's not a priority because I've found the clients I've got through word of mouth and have sought me out have been much better and easier to deal with.

I barely use facebook personally, it's mainly for sharing my blog posts and sharing interesting stuff from other people.

Have you thought about using Pinterest to file and display your articles? I hadn't really considered this until the other day when I came across another journo who was using it to link to work in his portfolio. You don't have to write anything about yourself, just let your articles do the talking. There's no need to include a picture, either, if you don't want to.

I am also planning to set up a website but, like you, hate, hate, hate writing about myself. It always ends up sounding cheesy. And I think putting a pic of myself on there would frighten clients away!

I use a website with a portfolio. it is perfect to send people to if they just want to find out more. it details my prices, my services and so on. To be fair though, I get most of my work through PPH and because of my reputation on there I get the same rate as I would going direct via my website.

These days I feel a website is essential - but I would say that as website content/writing is my job.
