Has anyone gone back to work in the public sector, after freelance work? I can't decide what to do and really need some advice!

After maternity leave, I left my local government job and worked freelance. Over the past 2 years this has enabled me to set up a small but successful private practice and do some extra training. An opportunity has arisen to join another local authority on a part time basis and I can't decide what to do. I would cut right back on my freelance work, probably to one day per week but keep it ticking over.

Has anyone else gone back into public sector work and was it the right thing to do? One one hand I am worried about giving up on my flexible, well-paid work and extended holidays. On the other hand I really miss working as part of a team and would appreciate the paid holidays and pension benefits. Also, I miss the career structure offered within the public sector and don't want to end up unemployable.

If anyone else has been in a similar position, please do offer some advice. The application deadline is looming and I don't know what to do!
