Please talk some sense into me...

I currently work full time in a job I don't particularly like but the pay/leave benefits are good and my boss has allowed me to juggle my hrs recently to take my dd to school when I had problems with our child-minder. My dh works nights so is not around to help with school run etc, so I ideally need to reduce my hrs .I have been short-listed for a part time role which I did 4 years ago, it is a lower band, and I have worked hard to get where I am , it is'nt a career by any means and I have had some pretty horrible days and encounters with my boss. looking at the financial side it would mean a 47% salary drop which we would struggle with, my gut instinct is not to go for it and perhaps ask my current boss to reduce my hrs slightly perhaps to 30 and hold off for something I really want to do. I am just really looking for some to talk some sense into me as I am really not sure what to do.

I think your instinct is right. Have you made a formal request for flexible working. This can be for all kinds of things including reducing hours. Definitely worth looking at. Good luck!

47% is a hell of a drop - reducing to 30 hours sounds like a good compromise. The boss sounds pretty reasonable and while you say you don't particularly like the job, you don't hate it either. I'd stay where you are and pursue a small reduction in hours.
