What are they actually expecting to pay

I would like to apply for a vacancy.
The advert says the salary is 'From £40,000 per annum plus excellent benefits'.
Could anyone give me an idea of what, realistically, the employer would be expecting to pay?

I think they expect to pay £40,000 or in the low 40s if you're particularly impressive.

£40,000 if they can get away with it.

Thank you. The 'from' suggests there is room for negotiation, but clearly not much!

I'd read it as they want to start you on 40k but there is potential for that to increase?

Maybe its one of those where theyd like to pay 40k but if the perfect candidate would cost them 45k then they would up it.
