Anyone do this freelance. I'm about to be pushed out of my job and this is what I'm really good at. Would it be crazy to try and work for myself? I figured I'd approach small businesses and also perhaps, offer cover for sickness and holidays on others. kind of like a temp without sky high agency fee's. Am I being to ambitious or do I just need to be more confident?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

if you are a free lance book keeper you'll need to be MLR registered

thanks for the heads up.

Watching with interest - just what I'm planning. Surely small businesses would need a few hours here and there on a weekly/monthly basis. I was thinking of trying to get work from a few local businesses and charging per hour

Book keeping and accountancy are INCREDIBLY competitive industries : because there are lots of CCAB accountants like me who potter along with little businesses from home.

MLR registration is a PITA but not negotiable
some sort of PII or Public liability insurance is pretty essential

and if you are going to do books you need to know how to use a range of software and spreadsheets and systems

or ideally, find a niche linked to your past work ...

where in the country are you TalkinPeace? Is it competitive throughout the country?

TalkinPeace · 10/06/2014 22:20

I'm in Hampshire, but yes, the "barriers to entry" for qualified accountants who no longer work full time are much lower than for newcomers who want to start out

its taken me 20 years to get my niche.

TalkinPeace, a name I've not seen in a while. The woman who knows all about tax and accounts on the eBay business board (I used to be a regular)

TalkinPeace · 10/06/2014 22:28

The very same .... I must get that page updated - I rarely go to Ebay now but they kindly host the page for me Wink

OP, are you a member of any professional bodies such as the AAT?

If so, I think they offer advice on starting out on your own, including PI cover requirements.
