I do sales training and one thing I always do is actually ASk for the business.
People rarely say - oh that's lovely I will have several please.
You need to say how many would you like or shall I wrap it for you or whatever is most appropriate.
If you do it using your own words and in a way you feel comfortable with it shouldn't be awkward at all.
I have seen lots of experienced sales people have a great sales call and leave with nothing simply because they have waited for the customer to ask THEM for the sale rather than the other way around .

ok hopping the scenario goes like this

customer: that's lovely

me: tell them about product about the artist etc (if they ask) i work in a gallery

customer: thats nice then they walk out, or they ask the price and then walk out

how would you ask for the sale in that situation.

Well I would try and find out if they are serious buyers by asking them " open" questions ( ones without one word answers) before wasting time giving them lots of info.
From whT you said these people, are just having a look and so can't really be sold to. They might even just be being polite rather than really being interested.
I think from the limited info you are giving it might be that the issue lies with getting more people who are actually in a position to buy into the gallery.

i know what you mean hopping i'm payment through the nose for advertising and it can be pretty quiet in the week.
