kit days

Love my job, going back in September part time which I'm looking forwards to. My maternity cover has just gone on maternity leave herself and the role isn't going to be coveredin any official sense until I return in September. So work are struggling a bit to keep things going until then.

I have agreed to do the full 10keeping in touch days. However, most these days are not in our office but visiting partners or remote staff. The next day I've been booked in for requires me to be away from home for 12 hours. Far apart from my 8 month old being a bottle refuser who doesn't actuality eat that much solids either, and the fact our childminder only does 8-6 which is ten hours. As this isn't my normal place of work, the travel time counts to my day. I get paid for a standard 7.5 hours. I'd happily work this kind of day pre-baby but then I'd also get the extra time of in lieu. Not sure what to do. .. I've already told work I might struggle to do a 12 hour day due to childcare but I'm not sure they are taking me very seriously and I don't want to set a precedence.

In other news I will need to express at least once during the day. At the office at my last kit day they found me somewhere but how does it work at other people's offices? Should I contact the partners before the meetings and ask them to provide somewhere?

Cheers!

I be wary for being too "helpful". I think you are already being accomodating by using your KIT days like this. I think it sets a precedent re childcare.

I don't suppose they have thought it through very carefully but asking a worker on mat leave to do a 12 hr KIT day - which is almost 2 days - whilst they are breastfeeding sounds a bit much. Some people pop into work have lunch and that is their KIT done.

Could you suggest working the 9 of 10 days (but be paid for 10) to cover the long days/extra childcare?

'No, that's not a KIT day, that's taking the piss'.

mrsmargot yeah I am very wary of it. That is exactly the plan though I feel it will be more like 8:2 as I've already spent some time getting my iT set up and I'm briefly meeting a new member of staff tomorrow (with baby in tow) . In all actuality in sure it won't really balance out but is better than nothing.
I want to do kit days because I want to keep my hand in (and it wil help for when I go back), because they need me and my help and because I need the money. I Agreed to do kit days as my understanding was that I would pop in for a catch up meeting to bring me up to speed when instead it looks like it will be like I never left.

I wish I knew what to do about expressing.

Anyone got any ideas about expressing at client sites? ?!

Why not hand it back to work to sort out? "I will need to express as I will be away from the DC for such a long time. I will need somewhere private for x mins twice during the day to express and have access to a fridge. Can I leave with that to you to sort out with client x please?". Sorry wasn't sure if you needed to express to keep the milk to just to empty your supply as it were.

It will help them realise exactly what they are asking of you...?

If you want to be more low key, can you approach someone you know within the partner org and ask them for their help?

I think you are going to need to be upfront about it. If you aren't you might find there is no time in the schedule or you might not be able to find a place on the day. I imagine it could be a big distraction.

Good luck.

The worrying about expressing rather than the expressing itself being a distraction.

fl0b0t · 18/05/2014 00:27

Absolutely ages. I have contacts at some client sites but not others add they are new. Annoyingly slay the schedule created for my days does not have time to express factored in, plus the extra expectations to work a long day so I feel doubly stressed!
