Hello I'm actively looking for a new job after beating the "dreadful awful" in Nov 2013. I have not been in a work environment for 2 years since diagnosis and treatment. I've had a few interviews already....the first two I really sucked...I mean really. Recently I got to the final stage interview but didn't get the job.....subsequently I had to be scraped off the floor I was that disappointed. Any advice on about returning to work after such a long time and hopefully into a senior position. I did an exam to help my knowledge and passed it but I feel a bit shaky and scared almost of everything. Sorry for the long post.

Firstly Thanks for coming through what must have been a life-shattering time. Glad you are able to get back to work.

I am sure you weren't as bad as you thought. Time out of the work force knocks your confidence for most people. I know that from mat leave.

Some practical thoughts:

  • Practice interviews with somebody? Somebody from your network that you trust but can also will deliver a realistic interview ie not your mum/DP etc.
  • Start doing some voluntary work or work experience to just get you back into the work environment? Even if not as senior as your last job it might be a good way to get back into things and something current to talk about in interviews.
  • Do any of the Cancer charities offer any support re back to work? Or find others that have done via their support boards.

Have you also reached out to all your work contacts to mention you are back on the market. They might be able to send you roles etc.

Thank you so much. Didn't think of volunteering but it seems a good idea so I will ask around. I have been in touch with agencies and roles seem to be coming through so I guess I just have to keep trying and hoping they like my cv. I do feel a bit awkward asking someone to help me interview but I will do it. I don't know the lingo on mumsnet so I'll just say a huge thank you in plain English and a x.

Hi, I was in a similar position about a year ago. Don't be too hard on yourself. You've been through a lot and getting interviews is great, it's all good practice and it will take a while to get your confidence back up.
No real advice other than try not to put too much pressure on yourself.

I found my ability to cope with stress has been greatly reduced post treatment for some reason! (Maybe going through a life-threatening diagnoses and treatment uses up all your coping mechanisms?!) Bach rescue remedy is good!

Voluntary work is a good idea, helps to ease you back in to a work environment with less pressure.

Good luck!

Thank you for the encouraging pep talk, you are spot on. I'm taking it all on board!
