Hi im completely new here so any help is greatly appreciated! I am 21 years old and have been working on & off since I was 14. Recently I was working at a supermarket, contracted 16-20 hours per week and I worked from september to march. I got bullied badly at work and after taking lots of time off sick (through the doctor) I eventually resigned. So I went to sign on and seek further employment. Ive been signing on for 2 weeks and they sent me a letter saying I cannot claim JSA as I havent contributed enough nic for tax years 13-14??? Ive just found out im 5 weeks pregnant (woohoo unexpected suprise!! Only been married 6 weeks!!!) So what happens now?! _Thankyou :-)

Did you apply for contribution based or income based js? I think you should be able to get income based unless its because you resigned from your job there may be a waiting period due to this before you can put in a claim

So now ring them or go in but theyll ring someone so id ring the enquiry line and find out why you're not entitled and when youll become entitled and theyll tell you what you can get assistance with/from in the mean time if you need it

Hi wightjellybaby!
thankyou for your reply!
Im totally confused & dont understand these things. I know that my husband works 26 hours a week, maybe that has something to do with it? Im due to go in tues so ill just see how I get on.
What im confused about also is if I do manage to bag myself a job, all going well im going to be having a baby in January....so how would that even work?! Would an employer take me on? Or is there a benefit I can get for being mum whilst husband works every hour God sends
Thankyou again
Ill keep you updated.
C x.

An employer cant discriminate against you for being pregnant

Your husbands income will be taken into account when you make a jsa claim but id have thought at 26hrs youd get something have you applied for housing benefit or tax credits your husband may be intitled to these.

Nearer to your due date your claim for jsa if still the case will be changed to income support which means as a full time mum you can be exempt from looking for a job until they are at full time school at 5 unless your circumstances improve.

When child has arrived you can get child benefit and child tax credits on top of benefits

Also there are maternity grants available through job centre again for nearer the time if needed
