Combining two businesses and starting from scratch - is this a good idea?

This is a bit complicated but please bear with me.

A bit of background:

  • I worked as a freelancer after having my daughter under the name ABC Ltd
  • Through that I was offered a permanent position which I worked in until recently
  • Over the last few years I have been building up a sideline business in a related field; I did this under a different name - XYZ Ltd - because I wanted a fresh start in a different area and also to keep it under the radar from my employer
  • I've now left my day job and am looking to build up my freelance business again but it's getting increasingly messy having two different business names e.g. on social media, networking and so on - some clients know me as ABC Ltd, others as XYZ Ltd.

So I'd like to combine the two businesses but I'm unsure if this is a good move. I've got websites for both and it seems daft to pay for that sort of thing twice but if I merge them will I actually make things worse i.e. none of my clients will know who I am and none of them will be able to find me?

I'd like to do it by combining the two company names and starting afresh but I'm really not sure of the pros and cons. Can anyone advise at all?

Thank you :)

pick the more succesful and use that ABC Ltd
and make the less successful be "ABC a trading name of XYZ Ltd"
it'll take about two years but people will learn

make the websites mirror each other
and keep ALL old email addresses forwarding into each other

Thanks, that all makes sense :)
