Cake decorator public liability insurance

I have a very small home business as a cake decorator. I was advised by my tutor that it would be a good idea to get Public Liability Insurance as I am now selling beyong my immediate circle of friends and family and I have two weddings coming up later this year.

The cheapest quote I've had was through MoneySupermarket from Ageas for £60 for the year. It seems a lot when I don't expect to have a turnover of more than a few thousand pounds if I'm lucky.

If anyone out there is running a similar business and has managed to find a better deal I'd really appreciate hearing from you. thanks

I think you've got a decent price for insurance.

Being in the food business, you are not in the lowest riskest category as viewed by insurers - and, by the nature of the business, you never will be.

Pay the premium and sell a few more cakes :)

Its just that I remember talking to someone at a craft fair a couple of years ago and they had insurance through an organisation specifically aimed at this sort of thing and were paying about 35 a year. As I use the business to fundraise for my daughter's Scout expeditions we are aiming to keep overheads as low as possible. Plus I work full time so growing the business is not really an option at this stage. I just don't want to lose my house!

OK, I understand your situation. I suppose my point is that, at £60, you would be insured by one of Europe's leading insurers with a very good reputation - Ageas.

You might find a cheaper quote elsewhere but, as a food industry operator, your prime concern should be to have a solid insurer behind you to back you up in the unlikely, but nevertheless possible, scenario, that 10 people are in hospital with food poisoning because they consumed your cakes which unfortunately had been decorated with foodstuffs which had a dodgy ingredient. At that point, you won't be thinking whether you paid £35 or £60 for your premium. Sorry to paint a horror scenario but that's the whole point of insurance.
