Finding a job in new location?

Hi there we (dh, ds aged 9 and dd aged 3 and me) live in Hampshire. Dh was in the navy and is now a test engineer,on 32k with 2 to 3 days away in uk weekly. I work 30 hours in civil service. We want to move closer to my family who live in Herefordshire, close enough for weekend visits but not on doorstep. Dh has been looking about 6 weeks and had 1 interview but unsuccessful. We plan to sell out house and rent in new location then buy when we know area well and out credit report is bit better than now. He's struggling to find jobs at similar wage and we can afford slight drop. He is registered on main websites but I think he needs to visit agencies in person and get some face to face contact. It is very stressful for all of us but we want to be nearer family (dhs are in Scotland however) and it's all quote overwhelming. Any thoughts?

Hi,
I did this about 5 years ago (although to move to my partner and had no DCS) I would seriously recommend getting seen. Spend a day booking appointments with agencies and meeting them properly. They always work better for you if they know who they are working for, rather than a faceless CV.

Good luck

Hope this helps

Its a bit relentless, often disheartening, I think you just have to keep plugging away! I was determined to move nearer my family, it took me two years! I was as flexible as I could be in terms of work, and said I wanted to be within 50 mile radius of family. This fifty mile radius includes three big towns - I had no idea it would be so fraught. Register with every agency going, phone HR people, hand in CVs, often just talking to people will give you new leads, new people to talk to. Dont give up, I think its mainly being in the right place, at the right time - your time obviously hasnt come yet -but it will!

Oh and I had three interviews for jobs for jobs I really really wanted, and got turned down! Happy ending though, got a lovely job, with lovely people - which was 4 miles outside the 50 limit radius! Keep at it, and try to keep your spirits up, I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Thanks dorothygherkins that's heartening to read. Perhaps aiming to move this summer is unrealistic!
