Would you expect this to be paid or unpaid if it was during notice period ?

Many thanks

I would think it would be taken as unpaid leave or as part of annual leave entitlement. Where I work you only get compassionate leave for immediate family.

Unpaid or as part of annual leave entitlement. My employers give paid compassionate leave for funeral of (I think) partenr, children, parents or siblings (possibly also PIL, but I'm not sure about that), but you have to take annual leave (or ask for unpaid leave if you don't have any left) for anyone more distantly related.
