Teaching 4 days per week

My maternity leave has only just started. I'm not going back until January/February but I'd like to go back 4 days. I'm a primary teacher. Am I allowed to do this or do I have to apply to the head for permission?

My head was good at accommodating what hours we wanted-I've done three and then two days. Other heads aren't. My friend was refused part time hours as every other girl who taught there (all started as young NQTs) quickly got married then pregnant and then wanted a jobshare and the head was faced with 8 out of classes being taught by jobshares and it really didn't work well. You can request it and they may/may not agree.

Are there any other part timers?

I've just gone back to primary teaching four days per week.

I went for an informal meeting with the head. I had my request in writing and took it with me. He met with the governors and then granted my request a few weeks later.

I have Wednesday off. It's great having that lovely day off as a kind on 'Island' in the middle of the week!

I'm lucky though as my request fits in nicely with a teacher who wanted to teach one day and TA two, so we could both be accommodated.

I'm going back 4 days in September.

I will be having every Friday off; I think probably in an ideal world I would go back 3 days but financially we couldn't manage.

I consider myself lucky to have 4 days.

Look on the TES forum, there's a standard application letter knocking around there, I think Theogriff posted it.

There's rules to follow about your request and the school's response so it's worth doing properly.

I requested 4 days but was denied. As a result I'm only going back for 13 weeks and then leaving.
