Redundancy question

Hi please if someone could help.

I work for a local authority and, following a recent review, I was selected for redundancy and I'm currently on my 90 days notice period. I wondered if any one knew if there would be the likelihood they would let me leave earlier? I don't have a job to go to but I just want to go for the sake of my mental health and well being. Thanks.

All you can do is ask. It depends what you do, how crucial it is you are there for the remainder of your notice period, and what change is happening that has resulted in your redundancy. For example if there's a restructuring that comes into effect on x date, they may be less likely to let you go earlier, but if there's not enough work or something, meaning they need fewer people, they might be more inclined to release you early.

No one wants potentially disgruntled miserable redundant employees hanging around longer than necessary really, so if you're not doing vital work, it's entirely possible they'd agree to release you early. Apart from anything else it will save them a bit of money as well.

Thank you. There is a restructuring coming into effect on the 1st April and obviously I am no longer part of it so have been placed into another office entirely doing menial work. I suppose all I can do is ask and as you say they will be saving payment of my salary for the next 3 months.

I went through something similar last year. When the new structure was put in place the ones that were leaving were just like spare parts.
Quite a few asked to leave early and there was no problem with it. I stayed until my official leaving date but only came into the office for a few days each week towards the end (my boss was leaving too so was fine with that).

That's exactly how I feel. My self confidence and esteem are at a low ebb and now I feel like I've just been plonked somewhere else and feel useless. The only thing if I left early would be that I wouldn't have priority access to any suitable jobs.

When I was made redundant a year ago, after 24 years with the same company, I had to stay until my leaving date, wasn't even allowed garden leave. The new organisation came into place 3 months before I left and I had absolutely nothing to do, but they wanted me around just in case they had to ask me something (and they were laying off around 100 of us so wanted to treat everyone the same)

Was sole destroying, spent 3 months job searching/surfing the net when everyone around me rushed about trying to do the job with reduced numbers/experience and I wasn't allowed to help.

Was there right up to clocking off time on the last day doing nothing.

Im the same as you although I haven't had 90 day notice yet, I know when I will be getting it. I would say they wouldn't let you leave earlier - I know that's not what you want to hear.

I have to decide if I want to take voluntary redundancy in the next couple of months or if I should fight to stay. Its horrible!
