Is it worth asking for feedback from the interview?

I've applied, got through various stages and and had a final interview. I've just been told whilst I have not been chosen for immediate appointment, I am a successful candidate and my name will be held in reserve for a few months in case their vacancy position changes. I'm keen to find out more -about what this actually means and about how I did during the interview but don't want to risk jeopardising any potential future offer. WWYD?

Absolutely ask for feedback! Ask nicely in a "I'd like to use this experience to work on my strengths and weaknesses" kind of way rather than sounding like you are moaning about not getting the job.

Thanks BikeRunSki - I most certainly dont want to come across as 'moaning'! Thats a good way of phrasing it...I also want to get some insight into how they see me fit with the organisation so really want to present it in a positive way. I'd actually prefer starting in a few months so long as a position does actually become available for me.

Definitely ask as suggested, it'll show you in a strong and proactive light and it'll give you good insight into your performance, how you come across, strengths and weaknesses, etc. All good stuff to help you in future as you retune your approch.

Thanks - just thinking - should I email or phone. The only phone number i have is for the HR people who were not present at interview. I can work out the panel members' email addresses but not sure of the proper etiquette. I want to thank them personally, and get their help in how I can come across better. WWYD?

Hi cat, if you can indeed work out the e-mail addresses, I would e-mail thanking them for theit time and the opportunity and asking whether it would be possible to have a brief phone conversation to obtain feedback. Play it from there.

Contact HR first. HR will provide 'official' feedback from the notes taken by the interviewers. Re the potential future role: ask for contact details for the hiring manager and phone or email them with the aim of a short, informal meeting. It will show you are keen, and it will give a you a chance to get a feel for the organisational environment as well as the role they have in mind. Good luck.
