Hi. My dh has an interview tomorrow and they have already asked his boss for a reference. Do you think this is a good sign that they are thinking of offering him the job or is it standard to check references b4 the interview? Thanks for any help....

Blimey! Is it an internal interview? No, it is not normal to check references until after you have offered someone a job and they have accepted. Perhaps it depends what line of work your DH is in? Is he okey about his boss knowing he is going for another job?

IME we check agreed references (e.g. employer before current employer/tutor/friend) before the interview and only take-up the reference from current employer once a firm offer has been made and accepted. Did your DH tell the interviewing firm that they could contact his current employer before the interview?

In teaching it is standard for references to be taken up before you are offered an interview.

I know in teaching jobs references for all short listed candidates are taken up before interviews.

Ooops, Nome beat me to it!

Hi - dh said it was fine to check refenrences whenever they wanted to. I just wondered if it was a good sign that he might get the job that's all!! I suppose I should just be patient until he's had the interview tomorrow
