team member with possible dyslexia

I took on a new member in my team in September 2013. At first he seemed to settle in well, but after his work picked up a little and he became busier, his work performance took a massive dip. He was making lots of mistakes - spelling, typos, not following up instructions and not taking on feedback he'd been given from senior members of the team, not working to schedules. In addition, the quality of work has just not been up to scratch - he clearly doesn't understand or engage with the field of work we are in.

He's in his probabtion period which is due to end at the end of March, and I have been working with him very closely to help him meet his objectives and improve his performance. I have advised him that if he doesn't improve then he will not pass his probation period.

However, he advised me yesterday that he is trying to get assesed for a possible diagnosis for dyslexia.

I'm working with my HR to work out all the legal / best practice ramifications, but does anyone have any advice for tools and tips to help him (and me!) to get to where he needs to get to? If anyone has experienced a similar situation, I'd be really grateful for some help.

Thanks
