Any freelance web-dev's, does local paper advertising bring in clients?

I usually freelance on clients sites and I'm hoping over the next few months to build up enough of a business to go totally alone. But other than elance / PPH and possibly google ads, i'm not sure how to get clients and was wondering if its worth spending some advertising money in the local paper - any thoughts, advice etc gratefully received!

I can kinda see your logic - you want to reach clients who may not have a particularly strong web presence, or their own web team, so going to them via traditional media may be useful as most other web devs are marketing through the web, is that what you're thinking?

In which case I wouldn't say 'don't do print' but I definitely don't think the local newspaper is the way to go either. It doesn't feel targeted enough for me.

I didn't look at the local website when I was looking for a website. I searched online for local website designers and was in contact with someone on Twitter. Eventually I went with someone who was recommended to me.

I contacted 6 designers and only 2 of them bothered to return my email!
