I did a similar thing 8 years ago. From shelf stacking to school science technician. I'm still at the same school.
Teaching assistants got a pay deal recently so they now earn more than me.
You can do NVQ level 2 and 3 but its the post that dicates the rate of pay. so if you had a level 3 but were doing a level 2 post then you would only be paid at the level 2 rate.
If you have experience of children in a school eg: helping with reading that would help. You dont need the NVQ before you start. I'm sure other mnetters have more advice.
Good luck!

I have applied at my local council to work in a school
all you need is to be able to relate to kids
and to have enhanced disclosure

i have to work term time as I have a son with sn who cant find childcare out of term time
so looked at this
good luck

You can also do a BTEC course by distance learning (which is what I cam doing at the mo). NVQ tends to require a placement with a school (please correct me if I am wrong!)
First step is definately to volunteer at a school as that seems to count for a lot & gives you some experience to put on your CV
