Sent home early, do I have rights?

At my last job if we were sent home early we'd only get paid for the hours we did. In my current job the same has happened. I started work at 9am this morning and we finished everything by 12:15. The GSM told everyone to go home despite some of us asking if there were any extra bits to do so we could get a bit more money. We've finished early before but I've never left after 3 hours because there's always been extra bits to do. I was supposed to do an 8 hour shift today but have been told I'd only be paid for the 3 1/4 hours I worked. I spoke to the GSM and he pretty much laughed in my face when I asked if I'd be paid for the 8 hours. January is going to be really quiet so we're likely to be sent home early then too without the full hours paid. Can companies legally do this? I'd rather be phoned and told not to bother coming in so I don't have to pay childcare fees which I wouldn't even earn back. Advice please!!

Are you a temp, Rachelx92?

StealthPolarBear · 17/12/2013 15:33

I thinnk it depends on your contract

MelanieCheeks · 17/12/2013 15:33

It really depends on what your contract says.

sisterofmercy · 17/12/2013 15:53

Hours worked are mostly covered by contract law so you'll need to look and see what it says. If you're still not sure then ring Acas 08457 47 47 47 and go through the contract with them (or just ask general questions) and they'll try and help you work it out.

Thanks for the replies i'll dig out my contract and have a look. And no I'm permanent x

If you have a permanent cnt

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 17/12/2013 22:30

oops

contract stating 40 hours (eg) then they need to pay you for those hours.

Id demand to stay onsite if they tried to dock my pay.

Rachelx92 · 18/12/2013 10:07

I'm contacted to 24 hours a week but I'm doing an extra 8 hour shift this week to try and make up for the lost hours but have a feeling the same will happen although we've been told this weekend will be very busy. I wouldn't mind the cut hours if I was on the managers pay!

Right, so you should be beong paid for 24 hours. If he sends you home for.more than the eight extra you are doing,.you should only lose those eight extrahours.
