Is it possible to work as a freelance counsellor?

has anyone done it and is it difficult to get started? What sort of training is needed?

Any thoughts, please?

Thanks so much.

Yes - a number of counsellors do work freelance. The training is long and expensive. But there are no shortcuts.

I think the first step would be to consult BACP: www.bacp.co.uk/

  • to see the qualifications required and ways to get there.

It can take 3 years or more. You need to do a Diploma in Counselling usually via a uni, ( first stage is to do the certificate) or a degree in psychotherapy. The you have to do hundreds of hours of counselling ( unpaid usually) before you are properly qualified.
Be aware that there is a glut of counsellors- it's a popular profession. I have 3 good friends who are freelance counsellors and they all struggle to get enough clients to make it a full time job. For most it's a 2nd income.
