If you are in a well paying job but hate it

Would you stay ?

I am a single mum and have a well paying job, but I hate it. Absolutely hate it. My boss is a vile bully.

What should I do? I really don't want to rely on benefits as I have always worked but am utterly miserable. If I took a much lesser paying job my salary and income would have to be mostly topped up by benefits as I can't afford the rent etc by myself .

In my position what would you do ?

If the problem is your boss rather than the work you do, couldn't you look for another similar job with a different organisation?

He is the top dog and no HR so no process. There are similar jobs but the salary is so much less that it would mean relying on the system for support.

Put something in boss's tea and take his job?

More seriously, get a similar job in a different organisation, go self-employed in your field, use your transferable skills to get an equally well-paid job in a similar or other field.

Your choice is not between your current job and nothing at all.

You say you would "have" to be topped up if you chose a lower paid job, but actually there's no "have to" about it; you would be at the mercy of shifting govt policy and cuts, and you might find yourself having to move to a much cheaper house and make cut backs in other ways.

I totally second what everyone else says: either raise a grievance against your boss or go all out to get an equivalent role. Don't let a nasty boss bully you into taking a much lower income, thus spoiling your chances of building a better future for yourself

Would you be entitled to benefits if you leave of your own accord? Worth checking the ins and outs of that (if you haven't already) before making any decisions.

I'd either try to make it better by challenging the bad behaviours where you are or look around for something else.

The problem that I have is that jobs like mine pay shit money locally and as I don't have a degree or anything like that the likeliness of me getting a similar job at the same salary will be tough.

I have pushed back on the behaviour and it improves for a while but never changes. I just feel stuck .

Tell him you are seriously considering leaving?
