Good evening:)
Just a quick question but does anything stop an employer writing a bad reference/ bland reference for their employee if they are displeased with the employee job hunting? Also, are you able to request a copy of your reference? Opinions seem to be divided from what I've heard and read.
I've been employed for 6 years and in a senior position. However my employer will be far from happy about potential job hunting and just wanted to see what you thought. Thank you!

Nothing stopping them writing a bland reference, in fact it's very common.

They can only give a bad reference if it is factual and can be substantiated, so for example documented performance concerns or disciplinary warnings.

Presumably you'd already have a job offer before a reference is requested anyway, so do you really think your employer would give a bad reference because they are cross you are leaving?

In terms of requesting a copy, you can, from the new employer. Your current employer will write it in confidence but it will go on to your file, which you are entitled to see on request.
