Asking for a wage rise - any tips?

I need to put in a letter asking for a wage rise.

The person I took over from was on £4200 more than me. I found this out accidentally but it is an official source that I saw, so it's not gossip. I do not do anything that she did not do however I do things that she did not do, so I am doing her own workload and more. I also get 'put on' a lot by management and do things that are not in my job description. One of the jobs that I have been given is done by assistant managers in other places yet I am a lowly secretary.

I don't want to come across as grabby....

Can anyone help?

Why are you doing a letter- have you had a meeting with your manager already and have been asked to put it in writing?

No, I haven't had a meeting yet but I know from other staff that if you ask directly they just say "put a request in writing and the partners will discuss it".
