am i right in saying that your employer must either give you 11 hours rest between shifts or 48 hours(taken over two days) if that makes sense.. my employer has me working 16 17 hours (morning to close) shifts then starting again in the morning with only around 3 hours sleep... also im contracted for 35 hours a week but over the last 2 weeks he has got me doing 50+ hours... its better for me but im knackered.. do i have the right to refuse these extra shifts??? im not quiet a robot....

The only way that you should be doing 50+ hours is if you've opted out of the 48 hour EU Directive, and yes, you should be having 11 hours between shifts. Speak to ACAS or your union rep if you have one.

going to speak with manager today and find out if it is a one off thing or if it will be a full time thing... i physically cannot do 50+ hours a week.. if i do not get a straight answer off him i shall get in contact with acas.. dont get me wrong i love my job but there is only so much i can take of it... i hardly see my DH and well, my mother is not well atm so trying to look after her as well as myself and dh is just about killing me..

You can probably refuse the extra shifts anyway, if your contractual hours are 35 hours a week. That might be simpler than talking about rest breaks, I don't know.

Anyway, here is information about rest breaks including a link to the exceptions to those rules.

thanks for the link... have spoken to my boss and he has lowered my hours for this week... although i have opted for an extra shift working in a different city for double pay travel expenses and a hotel with room service lol... think i may not come back lol... purely done it just for a break from the city i live ATM..
