Would you think this means I could ask to work 16 hrs to get tax credits? (I'm a single parent.)

It's a 6 mo contract and from the job description I would imagine you could just finish up a bit earlier.

Or would you think this only mean the days and times you work rather than how many hours?

Sounds like they expect 14 hours' work ie. 2 full days or 4 half days but sessions may vary from one week to another.

Thanks LIZS.

It is to research a collection so it wouldn't really matter how the hours were organised as long as it was done.

Agree, sounds like the 14 hours will be fixed, but the actual shifts will vary. I'd still go for it and ask if you could work 16 hours instead of 14!
