going back to work in publishing after 6 years freelancing - how?

Any advice much appreciated. Until 2006 I worked in publishing. Before leaving (I resigned after lots of company upheavals) I was in a commissioning role for about 5 months. Since then I've been freelancing but I'd like to get back in-house. I've applied for a couple of commissioning jobs and not even heard back - I'm getting paranoid that, at 38, I'm too old to be the ambitious, working-all-hours editor many trade publishers want to employ! And that my commissioning experience is a) limited and b) out of date... Plus I now have a small DD and am worried about how that would impact on her...

Anyone managed to get back into their previous profession, after many years of freelancing?
