How to obtain a reference

Hi, my former boss has never got round to writing my reference and I left the job 2 years ago! We had a very good relationship but he is terribly scatty, and means to do it but never has. I´ve reminded him a couple of times but feel uncomfortable doing this again. It´s the sort of thing that used to be MY job, he is not good at this type of thing. Any ideas on how to proceed?

type one up yourself and send it to him for his approval???

I did that once because as you I used to do that kind of thing for one of my old bosses so he was hopeless.

Yes, I´m VERY tempted to do this but feel a bit uncomfortable about it! I guess it´s the only way but know he will be really annoyed with himself that he didn´t do it himself and I feel sorry for him in anticipation.. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry, just phrase your message to him along the lines 'I appreciate that you are very busy and thought I prepare the reference as not to interfere with your schedule too much' or something along those lines :)
