Can an employer change your shifts with no notice

DP works a 3 week rota. One weekend (so 2 rest days during the week), 1 week of late shifts and then one week of early shifts.

He printed off his shifts today and his employer has changed the pattern and moved the weekend that he has to work, so now he is due to work the same weekend as me.

He queried it and was told that they had forgotten to give him notice they were changing (and admitted that they had given notice to some people but not all) but tough.

He is now on holiday for a week and if he hadn't checked before leaving he would have had no idea about the change.

Can they do this?
