Would you be hopping mad or glad you kept your job?

We have redundancies coming up at work. 6 people will go - 3 directors and 3 managers. There are 5 director jobs left and 5 manager jobs left. They are however getting rid of associate director level but will keep manager/senior manager levels. I am a senior manager and my boss has told me I'm not on the hit list (in confidence) but she mad it clear I would not be eligible for all positions which I take to mean I won't get to director level out of this.

In the new structure, it looks like one snr manager will get 4 staff out of this which everyone reckons will be me. If this is me, it means I will have the largest number of staff reporting to me yet I won't get any of the benefits of moving to director level. I am hopping as not only will there be pressure to shove work down the food chain ie to me and my 'team', I will be expected to develop these staff, all who have varying abilities. Two are really good but the the other tow will be high maintenance and I know will take all my time! I am hopping mad and feel well and truly dumped on! I fel the others who will automatically go to director level are not much better than me in terms of ability. I am HOPPING mad. Dhow would you feel? Glad you have kept your job or hopping mad! I am so busy as it is and well thought of in the company - but feel I will not have anything to show for it! Old you challenge your boss and ask for more money??

I'd be glad i wasn't being made redundant. It's a cold world out there.

I totally get where you're coming from, and in any other climate I'd suggest trying your luck. But honestly, right now - id just be grateful you have a job.

But don't count those chickens until you've been formally told either!

I can see where you are coming from. I don't know what industry you work in, but I would be really glad to have kept my job. Times is tough :)

I would also reserve judgement until you have it in black and white and have signed on the dotted line. Rumours abound at times of change and restructure.

You might get your wish and end up getting made redundant. Don't lose hope.

If you don't like it you are free to get a job at director level elsewhere and resign.

Yes will look for othe things but work from home full time which is handy. Fewer director jobs where I live and don't really want to move.

I am puzzled like itcouldbeworse. Are they creating more director positions? or is it that they are putting the directors and associate directors into one "pool" and so it is possible that some of the associate directors might get a director position.

Tazmo, if you can work from home full time then to answer your question, I would be incredibly relieved to keep a job with that much flexibility in a local labour market with fewer opportunities.

Yes putting associate directors and directors in one pool so if an associate director keeps their job they will automatically become a director. Due to folks near retirement, we guesstimate 1 senior director and two directors will go!

well from a purely legal point of view they can put both in the pool or they could put you all in the pool. As long as they think about it there is not much and tribunal can do about it. I have to admit however if i were advising them I would suggest them do what they have.

To answer your question I would be pleased i have the job and just continue to show you work hard and wait. The right opportunity will come along I am sure!

You are entitled to feel put upon but I would put up and shut up at the moment. It is incredibly tough out there at the moment (from someone who has never had diffiuculty finding work until now...).

It sounds like the message was poorly delivered. You boss may be in a position where they are unclear about their own position, feeling poorly communicated to and may dislike having to pass on information.

Putting the directors and assistant directors in the same pool and making three of those positons redundant makes sense. It would be difficult to serve redundancy on one of these people and then promote a manager / senior manager to one of those positions as it is the position and not the person who is being made redundant.

Redundancy is a terrible process that leaves everyone feeling under valued and unsettled, regardless of the outcome.

You might find that the process unsettles people and after the process, people not facing redundancy leave anyway so a position may open up!

As somebody who was made redundant overnight due to company insolvency I'd be glad that the company was making real changes in an attempt to restructure the company to work. Ours didn't until it was too late as they didn't want to upset people... Which meant eventually we all lost our jobs which was seriously traumatic.
I think you are also second guessing which can be dangerous. Find out exactly what is happening then decide if that's something you can live with.

Heard am ok but the workload is piling up! Horrible process! Boss wants me to manage all staff and workload , but no promo or pay rise! Shocker! Don't think I could motivate she I feel so demotivated myself. Dh says I should take it as may be promo in long run. Frankly I say I'm being taken for a mug if I take it on, cv being brushed up as we speak......
