Photoshop elements paint bucket - help!

Hi there, am hoping some experts may be out there...I am using photo shop elements and usually it allows the paint bucket to colour anything which I drp it on, ie a letter or a shape, (which is all the same colour). I am using this to change the colour of some letters. However at the moment it is colouring the entire layer! It is so frustrating. I eventually changed a setting but it not changes ALL the letters to the same colour with one click.
CAN YOU HELP!!!! (tearing hair out!!) So much appreciated if yu can!!!

I only know full Photoshop, does Elements have a magic wand?

If so use this to select the letters by clicking on them (with the shift key to add to the selection), then use the paint bucket to fill them in.

Does that make sense?
