Need help with supporting statement on job application

I need help from anyone who is good at job application forms! My qualifications are good, but I am rubbish at the supporting statements - I never know what to write.

I am a newly qualified college tutor/lecturer, but there aren't any local vacancies for my subjects at the moment. I want to apply for the post of exam invigilator at a college, but don't know what to put on the form. I want to apply for the job, because it could be a stepping stone to something more permanent in the college, but I can't say that, they want to know why I want to do the job of invigilator.

Do I just put all the 'I am hard-working, flexible etc.' stuff, or should I put something more specific?

What is the job description and skills required - match your skills and experience to that.

'Understand the exam process having worked at a college for my training etc - (give example of when you worked whilst training at a college.) Therefore I am familiar with the guidelines set out for students sitting public exams ( check what this document is I am sure there must be one and actually name it)

What does the person spec / job description say - must be flexible, good at team work, have experience of xyz....

Write down how you meet all of these and then draft that list into a readable document. That is your Supporting Statement.

Please don't include anything "I am hard-working" etc without an example to back it up - I am hard-working, and routinely covered exams on Saturday mornings when required etc.

Hi off on a tangent a bit! I just moved to a new area and there were no jobs advertised - I am a teacher too! I wrote a covering brief letter and emailed that and my cv to 10 schools (to the principal) - all came back - some to say thanks will keep you on file but I have had work in 3 of them - one of them loads! Just another avenue for you - re the application as others have said write the letter framed around the advert or specification - and sell yourself! Best of luck!

Great news! What is it?

An admin / managerial post within a national company working from their head office. Full time - which will be a shock but money good and with youngest starting in secondary school in Sept works perfectly. Start beginning of June.
